5 seconds of news is old then jumps to current version it downloaded. Does ProppFrexx cache files?

Post by phonic »

We are downloading news using the download command in ProppFrexx, and to a directory 3 minutes before it should play(using on display overlay command) and is downloaded the same as news.mp3, and noticed the first part or the last news is played first then jumps to the one its downloaded. it's like it's playing from cache in the first 5 or more seconds, then jumps to the current version is just downloaded.

Does the overlay buffer all files it's going to play before it airs them as soon as it's displayed( in our case 3 minutes before air)?

Note, that the download of the file must be completed before the overlay is shown!
In your case it sounds, as if you start the download when the overlay is shown...this mean, that the streams are already created with the 'old' version of the file. You then overwrite the file with new one...
As such, it starts with the pre-created 'old' file and yes, it caches some of that data.
The file streams are (of course) pre-created before they play, as reading in audio file must happen before they start to play - this is as said happening at the time when the overlay is shown.

I’ve now created and external script to download at X:56 before the overlay displays and it works fine now.

Sounds good. Note, that you could also have used a Reminder in the Program Scheduler to trigger the download.

I tried that idea before coding a solution but maybe it’s just me but the extra red reminder boxes that filled the complete schedule each hour next to existing programming, made it more complicated to read and edit.

I was thinking as an idea in a future version an events scheduler for such things would be helpful?

Not sure what you mean?!
If you are having a program and a reminder side by side - both take half of the day in space... nothing special or strange to work with.

It just made it less clear in my opinion. Personal preference maybe. But this is why:

and moving things around could confuse the people here using it and even end up deleting the news download by mistake:

So I decided to keep it plain and simple by making a script to do the job outside of ProppFrexx:

As a thought.. you could add a "hide reminders" option to hide the reminders when editing the programme schedule.
Just an idea.

That’s a fair option to consider!
