Virtual Audio Sound Card

Post by Micromarco »

I have installed OnAir on a server with no physical sound card loaded with Windows Server 2008 and have encountered the error below.

My question is, how do I get Windows Server 2008 to pretend that it has a sound card installed, so that ProppFrexx will open past the point of the following error?

I have installed Virtual Audio Cable from http://software.muzychenko.net/eng/vac.htm but can not get it to show up in the Windows Server 2008 sound section of the Control Panel.

Can you walk me through the procedure to get audio up and running in Windows Server 2008 please.

There is actually not much to work you through.
You should first ensure, that a sound device is present in your 'Windows Sound Control' panel and make sure, the virtual sound device passes all standrad Windows tests.
Then start ProppFrexx ONAIR and you might now need to adjust your 'Mixer Settings' (as such the above error might be normal and can be ignorred).
E.g. run the 'Mixer Setup Wizard' - which can be found in the help menu (at the top right of the main window, by clicking on the blue question mark icon).

My problem is that I do not know how to get the Virtual sound card to show up in the Windows sound control panel. I've been at this for a day now and can not find any examples on Google either.

I do not have this problem with my XP laptop with a sound card, just the server running Windows server 2008 without a sound card.

Can you recommend virtual sound driver software for Windows Server 2008 and tell me how to get it to show up in the Windows sound control panel.

ProppFrexx needs an (virtual) audio device driver – but actually not a physical soundcard.
So you might use a virtual audio device driver (virtual soundcard) on such a 2008 Server.

A few (I haven’t tested them) are below:
http://www.e2esoft.cn/vsc/
http://software.muzychenko.net/eng/vac.htm
http://www.shiningmorning.com/VirtualAu ... index.html

This might also help (as when activating the Terminal-Session resp. Remote Desktop, Windows might itself automatically install a virtual soundcard by itself):
http://www.emware.nl/articles/no-sound- ... h-rdp.html

However, if you have trouble installing those drivers, please contact the vendor of these products directly, as I can not offer support for them.
Basically: If you see the (virtual) audio device driver within the 'Windows Sound Control' panel, then ProppFrexx will also 'see' it.
But if you do not see the VAC within the 'Windows Sound Control' panel it seems to be not properly installed.

Note, that you typically need 'Admin' rights (root access) to your 2008 Server in order to install such drivers properly - so a simple user remote desktop connection is sometimes not sufficient.
