back up annd restore on different PCs

Post by Farbo »

What data are being backed up when making back up of settings?

I would like to achieve that we have same settings for all computers with PF installed and we save time by restoring back up for all machines, i.e. we do not need to manually set all PF instances´settings (like ACPD, stream server, etc.).

As said, the entire content of your config directory (which is by default your AppUserData folder).

Inside the "AppUserData" directory you will find all configuration files being created/used by ProppFrexx (which you typically should NEVER touch or modify manually), e.g.:
- *.layout : the persistant layout settings of your last session
- *.toolbar : the persistant toolbar settings of your last session
- *.mixer : the definition of your mixer channels
- *.mixing : the definition of your different mixing settings
- *.config, *.userconfig : all configuration and option settings
- *.encoding : the encoding profile settings
- *.log : any log files
- *.colors : media type color settings
- *.pfp : temporary or persistant playlist files
- *.pfs : persistant script files
- *.importformats : external scheduler log-file import definition
- *.entrystats : the media entry statistics file
- *.songhistory : the global songhistory file
- *.pfp : other temporary playlist files (e.g. the trackboard)
- *.medialibs : your defined media libraries
- *.cardwalllibs : your defined cardwall libraries
- *.scriptlibs : your defined script libraries
- *.midi : your defined MIDI Mapping
- *.iow : your defined IO-Warrior Mapping
- *.iov : your defined Velleman Mapping
- *.key : your defined Hotkey Mapping
- *.sio : your defined Serial-IO Mapping
- *.osc : your defined OSC Mapping
- *.bak : any older backup files
- *.access : any defined access limits
- *.userprofile : defined user profiles
- *.clients : defined remote user clients
- etc.

Depending on what you selected in the Backup dialog:
- the complete 'Config' directory
- any playlist based media library files (the playlist files itself)
- any playlist based cardwall library files (the playlist files itself)
- any script library files (the .pfs files itself)
You might also check the content of the actual backup by looking in your defines backup target folder.

Bernd, regarding - *.mixer : the definition of your mixer channels

Will there be a problem when importing those settings on different machine with different soundcard?

Anyway, I tried to export settings from my already set instance of PF to newly installed PF on different machine but nothing was changed after its restart.

In our school project we want give student complete setting so they do not have to change anything and they will just create manual playlist (with before prepared, tagged files with perspective ACPD and manual cue points). So generally they just will create folder based libraries with those prepared files and create manual playlist and define streaming server. Or streaming server settings will also be exported?

restoring of .mixer definition files on a different PC is not recommended when using different soundcards.
If ProppFrexx can not find the related soundcards, those settings would simply be ignored, as the soundcards could not be identified.

So in the mixer-channel definitions must once be defined on each PC. The system can not 'guess' the soundcards on those different PCs.
And yes, the config options also contain any streaming server settings.

Note, that the Backup and Restore functionality is primaryly designed to work on the same PC, but not on different PCs.

Hm, so each user has to set PF individually. :-( Pitty. I will have to record very detailed instruction video. Hm, but I will send you private message what we want to achieve, maybe default PF settings would be enough.

It is not a pitty, it is normal.
When dealing with hardware settings and having multiple different PCs there is no other way.
