When tag is saved ?

Post by hdradio »

I see in my playback history a played song long time ago that I want to change it's properties.
I hit Alt-3 open the tag editor, and change gerne and rating.
I click save. ( I have also tried clicking "Save Meta Data Tag")
I repeat that this song played sometime ago and it's not open by any other program.
I then check with mp3tag and I see that no changes have been made to that file.

I again hit Alt-3 and I see the new values. I click "Read" and the old values are restored.
I have tried with many other songs with same result.
I can't not even save Cue point data.

What am I doing wrong ?

Thank you Bernd.
I believe that you have to write a quick start guide with the absolute basic options someone has to set to start working as fast as possible.

Also the way you present some settings needs improvement (by my opinion) so people do not confuse.
I 'll write about that later. Feel hungry already :)

Bernd I think that settings should have the attached image's look.
That way no one will confuse.
Because having settings with so many checkboxes, a conflict might occur if both of some checkboxes are checked.

It depends a bit what properties you are changing?

If it is a standard TAG, like the 'Title' or the 'Artist' (basically everything which is on the 'TAG Data' tab of the TAG-Editor) is directly saved to the file.
So for these attributes there is no need to click on "Save Meta Data TAG".

"Save Meta Data TAG" is only needed for other non-standard TAGs, like cue-points, volume-points, events, etc. (basically everything which is on the other tabs of the TAG-Editor).
These additional attributes can not directly be monitored in Mp3Tag - as it only displays the standard TAGs.
So I assume you are not using these.

Here is a little video showing, what I am doing (are you testing things the same way?):
http://youtu.be/5v6OXk_98Ew

So if a file is not saved, then it there are the following possibilities:
a) the file is write protected
b) the file is in use (block) by some other app (should be in your case as you said)
c) you have set the global "Never Save anything to Audio Files" option in the general settings, section 'Metadata/WaveForm'?
Or the file's TAG data section is somehow corrupt...(what I also do not assume).

Have you may be (once in the past) saved a .pfmd meta data file for that track?
If yes, keep the "Meta Data has Priority" option in mind:
If checked, external meta data has priority over playlist based meta data.
Default (unchecked):
1. Playlist based meta data
2. Meta Data File (.pfmd)
3. Meta Data TAG (proppfrexx)
Priority (checked):
1. Meta Data TAG (proppfrexx)
2. Meta Data File (.pfmd)
3. Playlist based meta data
Note: (2) is only in effect, if the Use MetaData File option is set.

Again, we might so a TeamViewer session to take a look...

We just did a small TeamViewer session - issue solved:

It was the "Never Save anything to Audio Files" option which was enabled ;-)
We disabled that -and all was working...

In most case the default settings should work absolutely fine (and the "Never Save anything to Audio Files" is by default turned off - of course)!

But, as already discussed, I guess a 'Simple' and 'Expert' view of the options might help ('Simple' being the default)...plus a 'reset to defaults' option.
And I am currently cleaning up a few thing which are basically only there for 'older' backward compatibility - but are now not really needed any longer and are therefore just confusing...
